Movie review Nightmare on Elm Street
I heard they were remaking A Nightmare on Elm Street and thought to myself ..why? I understand that Hollywood has pretty much given up trying to make films that are original but remaking Elm street just seemed silly. I enjoyed the Nightmare movies but to be honest they are nothing groundbreaking. The first movie was unique and pretty scary but the other movies were just fun to kind of laugh at. Robert Englund was so cemented into the role that I felt that no one would be able to capture that character like he did. I then heard that Jackie Earl Haley was going to play Freddy in the new movie and that peaked my interest. Haley is a great character actor and I thought hm maybe he could pull it off.......Nope...The filmmakers completely wasted his talent. The new Elm Street brings absolutely nothing new to the table. I was hoping he would bring some uniqueness to the role but it was basically par for the course. Actually Robert Englund is far more entertaining. The sense of humor of Englunds Kreuger was one of the bright spots of the original series and this Freddy is pretty boring. I wasn't expecting much but still I'm a little disapointed. I thought an updated Freddy movie would have some state of the art dream sequences but they pretty much stayed with the same stuff from the originals. I will never understand why you remake a movie and bring nothing new to the table. The effects make up on Freddy himself didn't work at all. I think they were looking for a more realistic "burn victim" look but it actually looked more fake than the original. Freddy always had a mean streak in the originals and this version just seemed to be going through the motions. I didn't want an imitation of the old Freddy, I wanted a new version that created fear and would actually make me feel uncomfortable watching it. I know this is kind of an odd thing but when I watched the originals I was always rooting for Freddy to kill the teens but in this one I was just bored and wanted it to end. They have now remade Freddy, Jason and Mike Myers and really aside from a few bright spots in the new Halloween movie all of them are just the same crap. I wasn't expecting cinematic gold but just a unique vision that might make the movies respectable. The horror genre is suffering from no originality lately. Paranormal activity was a decent horror film but these remakes are just rehashed garbage. We get mediocre Saw movies every year, a new lame Final destination movies, and 2 or 3 boring exorcism movies.....please someone make something scary for Halloween!!
